Recent media reports have suggested that learners will be allowed on motorways from next year, however, there is no real evidence to support these claims. No white paper has been put forward, and there are no changes to the RTA to support this either. Amazingly media hype has promoted this, in the absence of any official government announcement.

Parliamentary process take some time, to implement learners being only accompanied on a motorway by a driving instructor, will be difficult to control or oversee. With learners currently able to practice privately, who will enforce any such rule and how will it sit with these 'special rules'.

Maybe, maybe not - but don't hold your breath.

Wasn't this announced by the minister in November? That's what I've read on another forum just now.

According to the MSA it is part of a package of measures which he will be bringing in next year.

Hi Jim that is what everybody is talking about, plus a recent comment at a meeting, that some of the press have picked up on, but nothing formal yet. Therefore not new news.

Hi Jim,
Aithough there has been a renewed interest in this suggestion, there has been no formal announcement, only a proposal along with many others. Confirmation is available directly from Mike Penning.

Merry Christmas

Learners on privatised motorways? It would have to be compulsory or else learners will have to spend more money, particularly if there is a lot of travel to site involved.
The syllabus mentioned by Rosemary Thew is rarely followed, why not have a proper driving record, that has responsibility from the pupil, as they seem to lose booking cards, a log book would have to be fairly well looked after?

Egg on his political career if it doesn't now go ahead.
At least he seems to be the only person in Government interested in improving things.
